Overview
Interstate 890 was constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s as part of the orginal Interstate Highway System. Interstate 890 mainly serves Schenectady, as it's original intention was, riding along the Mohawk River then serving the General Electric Plant and Downtown Schenectady before leading southeast into Rotterdam.

In the early 1970s, plans were made to expand the highway north from it's western terminus to Route 50 and Middle Line Road in the Town of Ballston, Saratoga County. Bridges at the Western Terminus were built as part of an interchange to a crossing over the Mohawk River, but these plans were soon abanonded and the bridges were left in place.
It was not until 1998 when New York Route 890 was built as a river crossing over the Mohawk.
